UCI World Cup Mont-Ste-Anne Quebec, Canada
Round #3 of the 2003 UCI World Cup Schedule was held at one of the
classic stops of the UCI tour in Mont-Ste Anne, near Quebec, Canada
this past weekend. With just 2 round gone off so far this year, it
has been an advantage for Wade Bootes, who just 6 weeks ago had surgery
on a shattered collarbone, an injury sustained while he was chasing
an Olympic dream on the velodrome, just a few short weeks before the
MTB season. Since then, Wade has made huge progress, actually being
able to compete at all the UCI World Cups, and round 2 and 3 of the
Norba Mountain Cross tour.
Each week, Wade had made great progress, and Mont Ste Anne would cap
off is 100% recovery, as he would be one of the top qualifiers, and
make it to the finals for the day. Wade made the racing look easy,
as each of his rounds, he would take the lead from the start on the
short jump filled course, and never be challenged. In the finals, Wade
settled into the 2nd gate position, as Carter would have first choice.
As the gate dropped, Bootes blasted out with a perfectly timed gate
start and was challenging Carter for the lead, but was barely edged
out in the first turn. Wade made a hard charge for the lead, but misjudged
the 3rd turn, causing him to slide slightly off the fastest line, and
gave the 3rd place rider, Cedric Gracia, just enough room to push in
front of Bootes, to take over the 2nd spot. Bootes rode back up to
Gracia just before the finish, but the short course didn't give Wade
enough time to make up the distance, giving him a 3rd for the day.
Wade was still happy with the result, letting him know that he is back
and ready to take home a World Cup win this season. Wade heads off
to round #4 of the World Cup schedule in 2 weeks in Vancouver, Canada
Wade qualified 2nd for the day, behind current World Cup Points leader
Eric Carter, of the Hyundai/Mongoose team. Bootes, who is know for
his power, was just off Carters blazing qualifying time, giving Wade
the advantage of gate choice throughout the nights finals, which would
play a huge role for the overall race.
