BMX Race Report
Bogota,
Colombia - August 19th & 20th
BMX
racing in other countries can always be a weird experience. You never
know what to expect and how things will go. Well if your going down
to Colombia, you will have no worries, as this year, as the last 3,
German Medina, one of the head BMX guys in the country had put together
one of the best BMX races in a long time.
German,
who competes in the older cruiser classes and is a trainer for some
of the top Pros in BMX, is a huge part of putting together an event
to help celebrate the life of Mario Soto. Mario help put the spotlight
on Colombia when his skills shined through and made a huge impact on
the US BMX race scene. After a tragic accident, Mario was taken away
from us, but the race helps us remember how much he effected BMX and
how much the people loved him.
Since
his death, German has put together this event to help remember Mario
and celebrate his life. Each year, they invite a group of Pro riders
from all over the world and have a great event. 2 days of racing, with
the Pros showcased in a short 3 hour format, to give the fans a good
show and let the riders have some free time to meet and show their appreciation.
This
years USA based pro crew included Cristian Becerine, Dale Holmes, Donny
Robinson, Greg Romero, Jason Richardson, Tyler Brown, Javier Colombo,
Danny Caluag, and Jason Rogers.
The
race had about 60 pro level riders and the Pro only format was a great
treat for the riders. Dale and Cristian both rode well, with Cristian
making the main event both days and Dale just missing out on both days
and finishing up 4th on day 2. Donny Robinson won the main event both
days, taking the overall victory.
All
in all, it was a great trip and it shows that people just love good
old BMX racing. I would like to thank German for inviting me down for
a great time and I look forward for next years event!

Cristian Becerine takes to the track in Bogota. Cristian is from South
America, Argentina, and his fans came out in full force to cheer him
on.

The
fans go crazy for the USA BMX Pros and it makes for some of the best
racing action you will find anywhere. The fans in Colombia are some
of the best in the world and made the guys feel like rock stars.

Dale
Holmes was flying all weekend in Colombia and just missed out of making
the main event both days. Dale still rips and is one of the most fun
guys to hang around.

Cristian
was flying and had fully recovered from his shoulder surgery. Cristian
made the main event both days, was out having fun with the fans, and
showing Danny C the way around the track.

Greg
Romero is back snapping for Revtec. Greg is by far one of the best guys
to hang around at the BMX races to learn from and have the most fun
you can. Coach G we love ya.

Both
of the elite men's world champions made the trip, with Donny winning
both days and Javier hitting the ground a few times too many.

Jason
Rogers was impressive as always and was sporting the lumberjack look
for the first few days of the trip.

Each
night at dinner, all the riders would get together and have fun, chat
about BMX, and bond. This made for some fun times and gave the trip
such a good feeling.

Jason
Richardson not only celebrated his birthday in Colombia, but his return
to racing after his broken femur in February. Jason rode extremely well
and it was great to see him back on his bike.
